brains on fire
little swimmers
electric heartbeats too
baby mammals

we’re all amoebas
in a dna sequence
cowboys with blacked-out eyes
tryin’ to idolize
hypnotize me

hippos and wild boars
playmate whores
turkey vultures and aquamarine
the colors don’t mesh well
but mean everything

between the places hard & worn
there’s still a truth
a whispered hope
amidst some thorns

you heard my truth
and came to me
i tried to hide
but you could see
something

and even if you choose
a little more time
face uncertainty head on
like baby mammals

i won’t envy you
i never do
trying to work out
a tired old question
in a fresh new pair of hands

t-shirts and track pants
unanimous back-glance
blush wine and turpentine
the flavors don’t mix well
but get us every time

between the places hard & worn
there’s still a truth
a whispered hope
amidst some thorns

you heard my truth
and came to me
i tried to hide
but you could see
something

many came before me now
i’m not that different
and they all keep reading
can’t stop reading
addicted to where
they want to be

i have to laugh
thought i’d given up martyrdom
exchanged my stake
for a bigger pen
and they all will hear
they won’t stop listening
addicted to where
they wish they could be

sit up high in your apartment
on the third floor
stay up there safe
from where you want to be
you don’t have to tell me
cause we’re all listening

escape on a vacation
and live just how you want
do just what you want
where no one can watch you
and no one can judge you

think about me over seafood
pick up the tab so sweetly
drop by a masquerade party
but babe, there aren’t enough crustaceans in the sea
and you’re only one crab away
from being me

“shouldn’t let other people get your kicks for you…”

sometimes there are no answers but the ones forced in contrivitions
and what do we do do with them
suffer and cry
delete old numbers
throw away old love letters
would we destroy what we’ve built
in the tempest of change
or will we enjoy all the beauty
of the leaves that turn

nights spent in old rhymes
considering past times
regurgitating lines
to make some sense out of life

how fast the time flies
and everything that tries eventually dies
but we shook off a little dust from the sky
and made believe our love could soar

linear looked to us like an equation
no regrets without expectations
signed in advance of a known destination
carried on without hesitation

to what beginnings
and what endings
around & around

don’t let me stop
i cannot stop

love me
where it is

and only there

“we’re one, but we’re not the same…”
